International audienceGiovan Battista Gelli (1498-1563) a shoemaker and a Florentine academician (!) was known all over Europe for two humorous philosophical dialogues "I capricci del bottaio" and "La Circe" which were both celebrated abroad. Soon translated into several languages, "La Circe" may be considered as a fundamental text of the European Renaissance. Unfortunately, whereas Gelli's original of La Circe gained renewed popularity in Italy at the turn of the XX century, today very few scholars in France are aware of the existence of that text.
