La fortuna francese della "Circe" di Giovan Battista Gelli (1498-1563)

International audienceGiovan Battista Gelli (1498-1563) a shoemaker and a Florentine academician (!) was known all over Europe for two humorous philosophical dialogues "I capricci del bottaio" and "La Circe" which were both celebrated abroad. Soon translated into several languages, "La Circe" may be considered as a fundamental text of the European Renaissance. Unfortunately, whereas Gelli's original of La Circe gained renewed popularity in Italy at the turn of the XX century, today very few scholars in France are aware of the existence of that text. In my article, I examine the two successful translations published in the XVI and XVII centuries and I try to appraise the features and merits of each. Finally I make a quick review of the fortunes of these two translations which, later on were rewritten by various authors who either remained faithful to Gelli's message or, on the contrary, willingly revised it.Giovan Battista Gelli (1498-1563), calzaiolo e accademico fiorentino (!), fu noto a livello europeo per due divertenti dialoghi filosofici e umoristici, "I capricci del bottaio" e "La Circe", che godettero all'estero di una notevole fortuna. Subito tradotta in diverse lingue, "La Circe" può essere annoverata fra i testi fondatori della cultura rinascimentale europea. Purtroppo, mentre gli originali gelliani hanno conosciuto una nuova popolarità in Italia tra 800 e 900, in Francia solo gli eruditi sembrano oggi a conoscenza di questo testo. In questo contributo esamineremo le due traduzioni di successo proposte ai lettori francesi nel 500 e nel 600 e cercheremo di valutarne le caratteristiche e i pregi. In seguito faremo una breve rassegna della fortuna di queste versioni che ispirarono diverse riscritture da parte di autori che ne seguirono o ne rovesciarono il messaggio a seconda dei casi
